The Folklore Museum is a cultural institution positioned at the intersection of Lisbon's historic urban fabric and its bold contemporary identity. Commissioned by the Lisbon Municipal Authority, the building serves as a living archive of Portuguese folk traditions — housing permanent collections, temporary exhibitions, a performance hall, and a research library.
Discuss a Similar ProjectThe site occupies a sensitive urban position between a protected 18th-century square and a postwar residential block. The building needed to respect the historic grain while asserting a confident contemporary identity that would attract a new generation of visitors. The programme also demanded a highly flexible interior capable of accommodating everything from intimate scholarly gatherings to major public performances.
The building is organised around a central atrium that draws natural light from a faceted roof structure — echoing the geometry of traditional Portuguese azulejo tilework at an architectural scale. Externally, a screen of perforated terracotta panels provides solar shading while referencing local craft traditions. Inside, all major gallery spaces can be reconfigured within 24 hours by a single maintenance team.
